How To Reshape The Sexy Filipina Image: A Campaign to Take Back the keyword “Filipina”
Three Generations of Filipina cousins
This is great!
Noemi Dado, one of the leading bloggers in the Philippines (aboutmyrecovery.com) has launched a campaign to ‘take back’ the keyword ‘Filipina’ in search engine results. As everyone knows, a keyword search for ‘Filipina’ continues to list websites dealing with porn sites and mail order brides as top results. I have stopped searching for ‘Filipina’ when I look for links as it gets to be very depressing.‚àö√ᬨ‚Ć What I am really against are the porn sites that add ‘filipina’ in their meta keywords that’s why they appear in the search results even if they have nothing to do with the Philippines (except a few porn sites starring Filipinas).
Many of these sites have nothing to do with the Philippines, most are degrading to the Filipina, a few are legitimately ok but still have this idealized and exotified (orientalized) view of what the Filipina is. Yes, the Filipina is sexy, but yes, according to Noemi, “she is smart, gorgeous, fabulous, witty, charming, intelligent, confident, and a nurturing woman. Strong, sensitive, nurturing, and insightful.” The question that came to Noemi’s mind, while discussing this topic with her sister,
San-Francisco-and-sometimes-Chicago-based Lorna Lardizabal Dietz (of RadiantView.com fame): How do we reshape the Sexy Filipina Image?
So they devised a strategy that she discusses in her blog here.
Please support the campaign by following her suggestions. Take back the Filipina keyword!
BTW, I’ve known Noemi and Lorna since the mid-70s during our college days at UP. We were on the Freshman Orientation Program Committee helping incoming freshmen register. Since then, I’ve been in contact with them, especially with Lorna when I visit San Francisco or when Lorna is here in Chicago. In fact, I am going to see her in San Francisco during the weekend … and she is here in Chicago right now but she’s in the burbs.
