Rectal Surgery on You Tube Probe
It’s disgusting, it’s highly unethical, it’s beyond contemptible. Those involved should be stripped of their licenses.
And here’s Ang Ladlad (the National Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Group) regarding this matter:

Ang Ladlad slams discrimination of rectal-surgery victim
Ang Ladlad, the national organization of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Filipinos, has slammed the doctors and nurses involved in the rectal operation of a gay patient that was later uploaded in YouTube.
“This is a violation of the patient-doctor confidentiality that is part of the Code of Ethics of a medical practitioner,” said Danton Remoto, chairman of Ang Ladlad and Associate Professor of English at Ateneo de Manila University. “What rubs salt on the patient’s dignity was the fact that the doctors and nurses were shown saying anti-gay statements while making fun of the sedated patient. In this case, it is not the patient but the doctors who are sick.”
The came stemmed from the rectal operation of “Jan-Jan,” a 39-year- old gay man who had sex in Cebu City on New Year’s Eve. He claimed he was drunk and his partner inserted a perfume canister in his rectum, which necessitated an operation on January 3. The operation was done at the government-run Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center. He said that “I trusted them. And yet they ridiculed me. . . Was that something a professional would do? I can’t even walk on the streets without being laughed at by my neighbors. I want my ordeal to end. I hope it doesn’t happen to anyone else.”
“We laud the investigation being done by the hospital. However, we would like to stress that the victim was made to sign a piece of paper he did not read nor was it explained to him. There seems to be a pattern of deception here. They wanted to turn him and his case into an object of fun, not of scientific or medical study. Therefore, we are batting for the revocation of licenses of the medical people involved. They have just violated the confidentiality clause between doctor and patient, and also the patient’s right to privacy. How would they feel if they were the ones whose images are spreading around in the limitless world of cyberspace?”
Ang Ladlad will offer psychological counseling to the victim, as well as help his lawyer, Guiller Ceniza, pursue the case in court. “Doctors are sometimes considered like gods who have power over our lives. In this case, they did not only defame and discriminate against another person, but they also stained the very dignity of their profession. We will pursue this case all the way to the Professional Regulations Commission and the Civil Service Commission. These callous people deserve to be taught a lesson they will never forget,” Remoto concluded.

Starting this Friday (April 4), Tanikalang Ginto will be updated irregularly. I am flying to Manila on Friday and probably won’t have Internet connection for a day or two. Once I am in Manila, I will have connectivity only for a day because I am flying again to the province where, hopefully, our connection at home is set up by this time. Otherwise, regular programming will recommence when I get back on the 12th. It’s only a short visit for a wedding.
I’ve been indisposed since Monday with a really nasty flu. In my waking moments, I tweaked/am tweaking Manong Ken’s Carinderia to update its look and added more links and categories.
I also added shopping links through amazon.com. For example, you can buy the small appliances that are featured in Elements of the Filipino Kitchen or some ingredients needed to make three kinds of pancit. Also the Cook Books section has been updated.
Hopefully, you will like the new additions.
This is such a big story in Chicago today. WBEZ (Chicago Public Radio) picked up John Kass’s column in the Chicago Tribune about Amante Enad who has been making lechon in his backyard and was cited by the pig police of the Village of Wheeling, Illinois to stop and desist. The original story is here (you may need to register).
Can’t anybody cook lechon in his/her own backyard anymore??! Well, apparently, in Wheeling, you can only cook one. If you cook more, you need to have a license. Or else the pig police of Wheeling will get you and haul you off to court, just like what they’re doing to Amante Enad.
Lots of changes at Tanikalang Ginto. The big project I am working on right now is to make the Nursing category as complete as possible. I found tons of nursing school websites and have ranked the schools according to their board passing rates from 2000-2004 and also according to their performance in the latest board exams (June 2007). As soon as the December 2007 results are out, i will also include those rankings too. Take note that a few of the schools have NO websites so I had to link whatever I can find about them. But still, there are two or three that are not in the radar at all. Example is Velez College in Cebu - they are one of the top nursing schools in the country but strangely enough, they have no website (although their med school has) and only an IRC site is good enough for linking. Another school that has top ten graduates is the Dr. Yanga’s Francisco Balagtas College in Bulacan - nothing out there about this school at all.
But I will keep on looking!
I just found this review of Tanikalang Ginto from Scout Report (The Internet Scout Project):
Philippine Golden Links
http://www.filipinolinks.com/
Designed by Kenneth Y. Ilio, Philippine Golden Links (also known as Tanikalang Ginto) has been online since 1994. The site contains numerous links, divided into thematic areas in an attempt to provide a broad range of online resources dealing with the Philippines. Two nice features on the site are the Golden Links of the Day and the Noteworthy Discovery of the Day. The Golden Links of the Day profile important links dealing with the Philippines, while the Noteworthy Discovery profiles new material on the Web. While the site does feature some commercial advertisements, there are some important resources covered here, and in particular, the sections dealing with travel and tourism throughout the area are thorough and authoritative.
As seen here.
Granted it’s from 2003, but reviews like this make what I am doing worthwhile. It has been 14 years now since I have been compiling Tanikalang Ginto and I still think it has relevance despite or inspite of the development of new technologies.
