The International Maritime Organization (IMO), consistent with the UN’s call for wider participation of women in various sectors, launched the "Women in Maritime" program.
IMO supported the establishment of the Pacific Women in Maritime Association (PACWIMA) and the IMO Regional Presence for East Asia advocated the establishment of "Women in Maritime" in the Philippines. In response to the call of the IMO, a core group of women belonging to different sectors of the maritime industry, organized "Women in Maritime, Philippines Association" or WIMAPHIL, on July 7, 2007.
