Created under RA 1387 as amended through authorship of Senator Domocao A. Alonto, the Mindanao State University was established in Marawi City on September 1, 1961. Silliman University was founded on August 28, 1901 as Silliman Institute. It was an elementary school for boys founded by Protestant missionaries Dr. David Sutherland Hibbard and Laura Crooks Hibbard under the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America. Operations started through a gift donation from a businessman and a Christian philanthropist of Cohoes, New York, Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman (where Silliman University got its name) - Dumaguete City.

- University of the Philippines Manila
One of the six autonomous universities under the University of the Philippines System. Most of the 12 units that now compose UP Manila, started as independent units decades ago. In 1977, these units were grouped together with the establishment of the Health Sciences Center. In 1979, the Center was elevated to the status of an autonomous university and was renamed University of the Philippines Manila in 1983.
