The WESM allows suppliers and buyers to trade electricity as a commodity. Electricity is a peculiar commodity. It cannot be stored and it is not possible to trace which generator produced the electricity consumed by a particular customer, thus necessitating a "pool" from which all output from generators are centrally coordinated. As a spot market, electricity is traded in real time.
