- Air Operations Wing - Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary
The Air Operations Wing of the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary was first conceived during the search and rescue operations for victims and survivors of the ill-fated m/v "Princess of the Orient", a passenger liner that sank in rough waters off the coast of Ternate, Cavite, Philippines, at the height of a typhoon in September 1998. Then Commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard, Rear Admiral Manuel De Leon PCG, called up the then Commander of the 103 rd Auxiliary Squadron, RAdm. Nestor Levanza PCGA, a helicopter and fixed wing pilot, to fly with him in the latter's ALOUETTE II Helicopter and proceed to the disaster area to coordinate search and rescue operations from the air.
After the operation, RAdm. De Leon and RAdm. Levanza and other PCGA officials saw how important and effective air support is in such situations. The started discussing the idea of a "flying unit" that will provide such support in PCGA activities.
