    Set in the present day Philippines, Magdalena focuses on the young Malen (the sweet-faced Angelica Panganiban), the daughter of a "healer." Malen lives in a very Catholic culture and sheǃÙs trying to come to terms with her awakening sexuality. Her mother scolds her for wearing scandalous clothing and showing an interest in boys, but Malen doesnǃÙt listen. She falls for a local hunk and part-time gigolo named Mike (Jericho Rosales) and moves in with him. Her antics prompt her mother to have a heart attack, and Malen feels guilt over her motherǃÙs death. She ends up taking on her motherǃÙs work as a prayer woman who takes money to say prayers for others and work "miracles." But something happens to Malen, and this "fake saint" seems able to perform real miracles, healing people in the neighborhood and taming her own demons.

    2005/16 mm/ 92 minutes Director Shuhei Fujita's debut, Quiet Summer tells a story of a young man raised in Japan, who comes to Taiwan to bury the ashes of his mother and finds his Taiwanese background. His travel quietly unfolds the happiness and sadness of a middle-aged Filipino worker and an old Chinese teacher living alone in a poor and single veteran community. Quiet Summer is a narrative film but strongly reflects the personal experiences and backgrounds of the director and actors in the society of Taiwan. Quiet summer has been screened at Philadelphia Film Festival (U.S.A), Pusan International Film Festival (Korea), FAJR International Film Festival (Iran) and Cinema Jove International Film Festival (Spain). Renato Oytas, an amateur actor, plays the Filipino foreign laborer in Taiwan. He is an OFW who was in Dubai before Taiwan and met the director at a church. He was asked to play himself in the film which necessitate filming on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon because of his job.
