    Atimonan lies on the eastern coast of Quezon Province, a good 45 minute drive from the provincial capital of Lucena. It has a total land area of 166.8 has. representing 2% of the toal land area of the province and is composed of 42 barangays. It is a second class municipality with an estimated population of 54,283 as of 1995. It is bounded on the north & northwest by Mauban, on the west & southwest by Pagbilao, on the southeast by Plaridel & Padre Burgos. The town is on a rolling terrain with its highest peak at 1,400ft above sea level situated at the Quezon National Forest Park. Fishing is the most important livelihood of the people being a coastal municipality. The municipality is drained by the Atimonan Maling River.

    The existence of Catanauan as a pueblo (town) was first recorded in the map of father Pedro Murillo dated 1934. The Petition dated 1685 of Bishop Andres Gonzales of Nueva Caceres, Naga City requesting the King of Spain to have Masbate and the Pueblo of Catanauan assigned to Recollect Order was reflective of the early creation of Catanauan. The recognized foundation year of the Municipality was 1713.

    GUMACA, founded in 1582 by the Spanish friar Diego de Oropesa, is one of the oldest towns in the Philippines and only several years younger than the "Noble and Ever Loyal City of Manila."
